I can’t get this working for the life of me, it keeps telling me the host machine doesn’t have the correct drivers which is total bull.
January 31, 2009 at 8:17 am #181974TCMuffinMemberI have successfully shared my HP Deskjet 460 which is attached to my Vista running Dell XPS notebook with my NC10 on Windows XP, 7, and Ubuntu.
Which printer do you have?
Which OS is on your host machine and which is on your Sammy?
January 31, 2009 at 5:24 pm #181981berflesMemberI have a PhotoSmart 7960 and run Vista 64 on my desktop. I got my mom’s Vista 32bit laptop to work with the desktop printer no problem, but trying to get my NC10 (XP and Windows 7) working doesn’t fly. I’ve downloaded the drivers from HP’s site for Windows XP, tried using the ones off the disc, and actually hooked up the printer directly to the NC10 and printed successfully but it still gives me that error.
It comes up and asks me for a password to connect to my desktop computer which is odd because I don’t have one set for it. That’s the only thing I can think of, the other laptop with Vista on it didn’t ask for a password to connect to the printer. The dialog seems to accept any user/pass as well before giving me that error so it seems like that might be the problem.

Make sure you have simple networking installed on windows 7 ( windows components ) make sure both pc’s are on the same work group. share the printer. then just type location of the dt ( the computer name ie: \desktop where desktop = your dt name ) it will show all shared places on your desktop then add printer manually. also make sure you have no firewalls blocking the network sharing ( or add the ip addresses to the trusted list )
January 31, 2009 at 5:47 pm #181982berflesMemberI tried having it find the printer just by typing the computer name but it doesn’t find anything that way. If I do the computer name + the printer name, that stupid password box comes up which makes no sense since I have set nothing as a password.
I doubt the firewall is the issue because the other laptop worked fine the first time.
February 1, 2009 at 4:26 pm #181983berflesMemberAnyone else? It has to be an issue with it asking me for a user name and password. I tried making identical accounts on both computer because I read to do that if you get the login crap, but that didn’t help either.
February 1, 2009 at 7:10 pm #181975TCMuffinMemberHi Berfles
OK – I’m going to try to recreate how I’ve shared my 460 – I’m sorry if it seems a bit ‘Janet and John’ but sometimes the simplest thing is the cause of the problem.
Check both machines are in the same workgroup, e.g. WORKGROUP (default on Vista) or HOME (default on XP Home). It doesn’t matter which, just as long as they are the same.
-
On the Vista machine select Settings > Control Panel > System > Advance System Settings, select the Computer Name tab in the System Properties window and click on the ‘Change’ button if you need to change the workgroup.
-
On the Sammy select Settings > Control Panel > System > select the Computer Name tab in the System Properties window and click on the ‘Change’ button if you need to change the workgroup
Turn on the printer 😉
Turn off, or pause, the firewalls and antivirus software on both machines.
On the Vista host machine:
-
Turn off UAC (Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control on or off > untick the box next to Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer > and click ‘OK’)
-
Select Settings > Control Panel > Printers. Right click on the printer you wish to share with your Sammy and select ‘Sharing… ‘
-
Ensure the boxes next to ‘Share this printer’ and ‘Render print jobs on client computers’ are ticked and type a Share name (I’ve used new 460) or accept the suggested name by cliicking on the ‘OK’ button
Moving over to your Sammy:
-
Select Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes > Add Printer
-
In the Add Printer Wizard dialogue window, click ‘Next’. Click on the radio button next to ‘A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer’ and you should see the ‘WORKGROUP’ (or ‘HOME’) workgroup with your Vista machine (in my case TC-MUFFIN-3). If you double click on TC-MUFFIN-3, all the printers attached to this computer are listed. Select your printer (in my case ‘new 460’ and click ‘Next’. Click ‘Yes’ in answer to the ‘Connect to Printer’ dialogue window and click ‘Next’ in the ‘Default Printer’ dialogue window. Click ‘Finish’
-
Select Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes and your new printer should be listed and showing as the default printer. Click on this printer
-
In the printer dialogue, select Printer > Properties and select ‘Print Test Page’ and my test page has printed OK
Turn on, or resume, the firewalls and antivirus software on both machines.
On your Sammy, select Settings > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes and click on your printer. In the printer dialogue, select Printer > Properties and select ‘Print Test Page’ and my test page has again printed OK.
I really hope this helps 😕

Already tried that too. It shouldn’t even be asking me for a password.
TC, I’ll try your method a little later, thanks for typing all that up. It didn’t ask you for a user or password at all any time?
February 2, 2009 at 1:10 am #181985berflesMemberOk, didn’t work either. If I let it try to browse for the printer all I get is this:
Everything is enabled on the Vista machine. I don’t get it. This is why I HATE computers sometimes, I can’t stand when something doesn’t work for no reason. It’s ridiculous.
February 2, 2009 at 1:23 am #181976TCMuffinMemberHi Berfles
It’s now 0123 in the UK…..got to go to bed…..I’ll look at it again in the morning %-6
February 2, 2009 at 1:25 am #181977TCMuffinMemberQuick thought…what happens when you double click on ‘Microsoft Windows Network’?
February 2, 2009 at 2:10 am #181986berflesMemberI get an hourglass for about 20 seconds and then it goes away and nothing changes.

February 2, 2009 at 11:03 am #181978TCMuffinMemberI’ve just remembered I had a similar problem installing an HP 7310 on a client’s network with most of the PCs running XP. I solved it by loading the HP CD and installing the printer’s software on each laptop.
So – one last try. If you have the original CD which came with your printer install the software from this, otherwise download the software (it’s only 21.52 MB) from the HP site.
This is from memory, so may not be entirely accurate, but you should get the idea. Turn on both computers and the printer. Run the HP software which at some point will ask if the printer is a local or network printer. Click the radio button next to ‘network printer’ and the software will look for the printer and should find it and give you the choice of installing it. Allow the software to finish at which time you may have to restart your Sammy.
I recommend immediately running the HP Software Update utility. Once all of this has completed, I would also recommend removing the HP software from starting every time you start the computer. I use a really useful, free tool CCleaner to remove detritus, check the registry, remove software, and control what software starts when the computer starts.
Et voila – you, hopefully, have a printer attached to your Sammy!
