I didn’t see a thread yet for the free netbook game series so I’m just gonna post some here and if you want you can sticky it.
Gunbound US – Gunbound EU – Basically a turn-based tank battle game with upgrades and cosmetic items for your character.
MMORPG – Has compiled a list of a ton of free (and pay-to-play) massive multiplayer online games such as Shot-Online (golf) and MapleStory (hack-n-slash rpg)
Combat Arms – Good first person shooter, totally free except some optional upgrades. This game is a little more hardware intensive but I think it should work after looking at the sys requirements.
January 19, 2009 at 10:32 am #180271jezMemberGood plan, thanks for the suggestions. I’ve got some good ones but it’s always great to discover these hidden gems :). I don’t know any of those.
Keep ’em coming!
January 19, 2009 at 11:01 am #180278DeejMemberI have loads of these bookmarked, try some out!
FreeCiv – Free, open source version of Civ 2. Lots of mods, AI files and with excellent support and community.
Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe – Free, open source version of Transport Tycoon. A brilliant version of the game, seriously give this a go, you’ll wonder where the time went 🙂
Battle for Wesnoth – Turn-based fantasy strategy. Great 2D sprite graphics, campaign mode and loads of user-made custom maps and missions to play.
Cave Story – Incredible 2D platformer, with gameplay in style of the old Metroid games. Has a brilliant retro feel to it, great music and level design. Try with a gamepad if you have one! 🙂
Nethack – Very old school dungeon rpg adventure. The graphics are very simple, but the depth is incredible. You can manipulate practically everything using a plethora of commands, such as hit, kick, drink, eat, put on, throw, read, inscribe etc etc. You will die in this game, it’s just all about when and how!
Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 – The creators of the GTA series, Rockstar, released their first 2 games for free download on their official site. They’re still worth playing today in all their 2D gory glory!
I’ll try and post more later. These are all 2D games that run great on the NC10 that I’ve killed a lot of time with. compile another bunch with some 3D games next time, but for now just let me if you have any problems running them and I’ll be glad to help.
January 19, 2009 at 11:43 pm #180279DeejMemberSome free 3D games! If the NC10 can run UT and Quake 3 fine, then these will run without a hitch for you 🙂
Tremulous – Team-based, human vs aliens first person shooter awesomeness. Great game with great players!
TA Spring – Total Annihilation is still my favourite strategy game of all time. TA Spring is a modern update of that, with full 3D landscapes with deformable terrain. What I love about the game is the units don’t always hit each other with their weapons; Shots can be avoided by moving your troops. Brilliant fun and great active community.
Gunz Online – The only game so far I can’t personally vouch for, but my friend plays all the time on his NC10. A first person extreme gun play game with acrobatics. Uses a similar system as Gunbound, where you can upgrade your character over time with new looks and items.
Again, these are all free. I’ll compile a list of some more free classics I enjoy over the coming days. Enjoy!
January 20, 2009 at 9:10 am #180272jezMemberGood stuff Deej! Thanks for these. I look forward to testing them on my ol’ Sammy.
January 20, 2009 at 9:14 pm #180274dadanMemberThanks for all the games
I just tried out Combat Arms, but it doesn’t work because you need DirectX 9.0c
January 20, 2009 at 9:45 pm #180281ZPEMemberPlayed Gunz but it really isn’t the type of game I’d play on a netbook as your mouse gets some intensive use along with your WSAD pad if you’re happy to spend some time developing that style all the pros use.
January 22, 2009 at 1:12 pm #18028020SylMemberKnytt Stories – Gorgeous Platform game, run perfectly. A lot of levels (extension, or made by fans, see forum). To my mind, best indie game.
February 3, 2009 at 1:05 pm #180276Dom01MemberAnyone had any luck with TA Spring! I am a massive TA fan and am very interested in this! I can’t get it to work at all tho! And it seems the makers arn’t that interested in making it easy either!
It loads and that is about it! I think I need to copy some files from my TA CD which is fine (had to do the same to make the original work) but it doesn’t tell me what it wants or where to put them!
TBH the system specs make it look like it wont be a good one for a Netbook! Abd TBH TA as it is is great for teh Netbook as it supports 1024 X 600 out of the box and is not the most demanding game (I used to play it on my old P133 😉
I would like to try this on my Desktop tho sp any help woudl be great!
February 9, 2009 at 8:20 pm #180283MichaelWMember[link]http://www18.big.or.jp/~hikoza/Prod/index_e.html[/url] – Warning Forever is an abstract shoot-em-up that looks very nice and has me hooked at the moment.
There are quite a few other “shmups” available here

RTS (Real-time strategy games). I have not tried these myself,(Desktop recently broke, awaiting my NC10) yet, but I used to play Command & Conquer on a machine with something like 128mb of system ram (first PC game I had ever played, so maybe nostalgia is skewing my perception of how great it is :P). Great games. So I assume/hope they will run fine with a bit of effort! If it scrolls too fast, or you have other problems; there is a respectively active forum somewhere on the linked site for such things. Please make sure you follow the instructions for installation, both Vista and XP guides on the site.

February 18, 2009 at 3:53 pm #180275ParodyMemberThe Ur-Quan Masters, a port of Star Control II to modern systems, runs perfectly. Play one of the greatest games of all time on your favorite portable computer!
I recommend picking up a map pic or PDF and reading the FAQ for a couple in-game hints that were dropped from the version they started from.
February 20, 2009 at 10:05 pm #180273MrBeardyMemberTake a look here guys

Loads of free legal games, some have been mentioned before such as freeciv, but its a handy resource. Unfortunately it does not list a recommended spec for the games, and ive only tried Warzone 2100 RTS which runs very nicely.
February 21, 2009 at 2:48 pm #180282stvMemberBeing a fan of free games, I’ve found the Free PC Gaming Blog to be a good source of info.
They’ve outlined the best of the best as well. I can’t tell you which of these will work on the NC10, but looking at some of the specs, I’d bet that most of them will work.
