Fotopic, my favorite online gallery site for sticking my pics on for family and friends to view has disapppeared off the cyber trail, with rumours of them having either “technical problems” or having gone to the wall.
Whatever the reason none of their sites are available now so I need to find a site to post up my gallery pics or an option for authoring my own gallery to stick on my own website. I do not really have the time for lots of coding and messing about, simplicity is the name of the game here. I prob need 200 – 300 meg of space or thereabouts if I use an online service OR a simple and quick to use out of the box, free gallery prog,
Any options you can endorse ?
January 4, 2009 at 12:48 pm #178435jezMemberWell I guess the 3 key players these days are:
-
*Yahoo’s Flickr
*Microsoft’s Live gallery
*Google’s PicasaAll three seem much of a muchness to me. I tend to use Flickr for online stuff as it is simple to use pics on your site, they have various Flash gallery widgets and their mature API has lots of apps written for it. You can only upload 100mb a month on the free one though, not a problem when using gradually but makes a sudden switch harder.
I use Picasa for my local PC as I prefer the software. I tend not to upload personal stuff so I can use two different systems in that way!
Hopefully your preferred provider will be up and running sooner or later!

January 4, 2009 at 1:20 pm #178436fatnbaldMemberThanks for the opinions, I will have a look at them and see what they are about. Whilst there was advertising on fotopic it was pretty unobtrusive and with 250Mb of free space did the job quite well.
I do have my own site that I could set up a gallery on but it is a time and cannot be a*sed scenario. At the moment the link from my own site just points to the fotopic site, with frame masking there is little indication to the user that they are navigating to a different web site completely, getting the layout and tags all correct under my own steam will be a pain.January 5, 2009 at 6:19 pm #178437fatnbaldMemberPanic over, (you were panicking with me weren’t you lol ?), it is all back up and running.
“Technical Fault” was the in depth reason for the 4 day outage, lol the techie with the password on hols prob!
No doubt there will be people leaving in droves now, I saw some forum posts quoting 75,000 images on the site, still works for my little collection though
