I got a 16GB SDHC chip and would like to use it as C: boot/program drive, leaving the hard drive for music and data. Seems like it would run faster and also cut down on HD spinning, fan running. Anyone try this?
Unfortunately the NC10 is not able to boot from memory cards at present.
Additionally I have been unable to boot from an SD card using a USB card reader, though USB memory sticks are bootable.
I don’t think the SD card reader is accessible even if you install GRUB and attempt to chain boot the SD card from the hard drive. Though I haven’t attempted this.
Additionally memory cards are usually only faster than hard drives in some aspects such as random access, you may find for real-life usage the SD card feels a lot slower than the hard-drive.
ok. thanks. have heard the new wind u1115 hybrid will do this. would be nice. does the nc20 allow it?
There are some computers which can boot from their inbuilt card reader, unfortunately most cannot. It may be possible in the future with a BIOS update, but don’t hold your breath for it.
As far as the NC20 is concerned, I would guess that it wont. But I have nothing to back that up.
