MemberJust turned my new NC10 (Black) on an few hours ago and I’m quite pleased so far.
Along with the NC10, I bought an MS Notebook mouse & a brandless dvd rom (which the software thinks is a Philips). There’s no Mcafee software installed! I’ve been robbed! 🙁 I was soo looking forward to uninstalling it with the Mcafee Removal Tool too 😉 What I did get was AVG which I’ve never used before and is free..so can’t see that being much cop – will replace with Kaspersky as soon as it arrives.
Haven’t sorted out any internet connection yet, probably go with 3 or Vodafone..
They (PowerC) partitioned my HHD in half, I’d have prefered a smaller C drive but nevermind.
I’m a little puzzled over activating XP over the net. I never got asked when I swiched the netbook on. Anyone?

MemberUmm… are you sure you got a new NC10 ? Did it take you through the setup when you turned it on ? That’s where the disk is partitioned. I am also really surprised it has AVG installed.
I am more than a bit suspicious…..sorry and I really really hope I am wrong.
You don’t need to activate XP.

ParticipantIt was most likely a new one, it’s just that PowerC installed some extra RAM and ran the initial setup. I wonder what name they used during the setup and thus permanently set into the recovery partition.
Guess they decided that you didn’t need the trial of McAfee as well, I wonder if they removed it properly using the removal tool.

MemberHi guys
No, no set up screen at all.
The name they gave the nc10? This is found under MyComputer/System Properties no? If so, then they called it Samsung Electronics SEC & it’s registered to ‘User’.If I don’t need to activate XP, how come going to start/programs/startup reveals ‘Activate-XP’? (missing shortcut message if I press)
Did everyone have Open Office 3 installed? Wish the hadn’t bothered as I would only have installed a few bits from it.
I’ll do some more dabbling today, I need to go through Freedy’s Tips for Speeding the NC10 up….and get rid of those damn balloon hints 🙂
Alfihar I think I’ll try the tool to see if it finds anything.

ParticipantAt-least they appear to have chosen a sensible name.
Open Office 3 does not come with the NC10 as standard. I wonder if they installed anything else.

MemberWell I ran the removal tool, forgeting to check program files first to see if there was a Mcafee folder but nevermind. Not sure if it found anything really but it did say i’d have to restart..
So then I ran it again and was asked to restart.. My guess is there was nothing there in the first place 🙂Can’t seem to find any other ‘added’ software, no, no Photoshop or Dreamweaver unfortunately 🙂

MemberBeing the suspicions type, I wonder if they installed anything ‘unwanted’ on your computer. If it was me I would use the recovery disk to get back to the Samsung vanilla install.

Me too…I’d go further and do a ‘clean’ install from the supplied System Recovery Media (aka WinXP Home). But then I’m known for my paranoia.Neurotic from Wales 😉

MemberPersonally I’d be sending the bloody thing back.
Think about it – you paid them to upgrade the memory (a 1 min job) which can be checked in BIOS to ensure it works.
Why would they take they time to uninstall MacAfee, install AVG, install OpenOffice ? All of which would take probably 30-45 mins….
I’ll bet a £1 that your NC10 is second user.

Memberfor customer service i imagine. tho i still wouldnt be happy.
I doubt its second user.
Have a look at the Event Viewer, see what date it was first turnt on, then you will know how long its been kicking around 🙂AVG crippled my system on Windows 7, so i think i’ll be getting rid of that soon.

MemberHmm possibly Matt. I’ll stick with it though 🙂 I don’t want to do a clean install though, as it might put loads of crap on that I don’t want.
At best, potential buyers might see this thread and help them in decide whether or not they give PowerC a go.February 8, 2009 at 6:57 pm #182906MattJessop
MemberHI Bletch, well if you are happy then that’s what matters. Doing a clean install won’t install loads of bloatware, the only thing to get rid of is the AV software,
