ParticipantThe brightness keys now work correctly in Fedora 10 after the latest kernel update.
Version 2.6.26.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686The backlight toggle still doesn’t work though.
Might see if I can sort that out later.EDIT:
You may need to run the following commands as root:-setkeycodes e008 225
setkeycodes e009 224February 19, 2009 at 7:58 pm #184426Xisdibik
MemberWhich Backlight toggle are you referring to? Im glad to hear about the latest kernel update fixing the brightness keys, I had checked out the fedora 11 alpha live CD (on USB), and the brightness keys worked. The fedora 10 USB didnt, but it doesnt have the kernel update in it.

Fn + F5 should toggle the backlight.[quote1235077801=Xisdibik]Im glad to hear about the latest kernel update fixing the brightness keys, I had checked out the fedora 11 alpha live CD (on USB), and the brightness keys worked. Yeah the Fedora 11 alpha has a more up to date kernel, I was considering putting it on my NC10, though I’d been having some problems with it on another machine. I thought I’d wait until the kernel with the patch was released for Fedora 10 as I’m using my NC10 quite a bit at the moment.February 20, 2009 at 8:13 pm #184427Xisdibik
MemberSemi off topic question but, I am in the #NCXX irc channel, and im wondering if you are there, ever come in there, or use a different name there 😛

MemberGood to hear that one more distro fixed the brightness keys. Ubuntu seems to be far behind the problem.

I’m struggling a bit with putting Fedora 11 on my NC10. The distro loads OK, but the Software Update is a bit flaky leading to kernel errors. Will let you know if I eventually get it stable.

Im not sure if you have tested F11 now thats its release, but the kernel seems to still not have the keycodes put in. Wondering if the same thing you posted to fix F10’s brightness keys works for F11.
also Alfihar, why are you never on the IRC channel anymore!

The problem with Fedora 11 and brightness control is different from Fedora 10, with 11 it’s due to a problem with KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) which gives the nice startup without any flickering. You can disable it and get brightness control back by editing the /boot/grub/grub.conf file, and adding the following as a kernel boot parameter:-
nomodeset vga=0x315
As for the IRC channel I’ve been really busy recently, though I’m going to have a lot more free time this summer. Amusingly I just reinstalled Xchat tonight, maybe I’ll start hanging around the IRC again.

MemberSo what your saying is, for Fedora 11, we can have brightness keys working but no flickerless awesome boot, or no brightness, and awesome bootsauce?

Correct, however you will still see the nice animated startup and shutdown screens, you will just have a flicker when booting ends and the login screen appears. It will work just like it did in Fedora 10.If you want to keep KMS but want to only change the brightness every so often there is another option. As root you can issue the following command to directly change the brightness:-
setpci -s 00:02.1 F4.B=XX
Where XX is a hexadecimal number ranging from 00 to FF. 00 is minimum, FF is maximum.

MemberIll go with the first choice 😉

I went with the second option, mostly because I don’t tend to change the brightness that often.[quote1245227495=Xisdibik]Hey, are you by any chance able to get online sometime soon. Got a question about the F11 install. Im on IRC now if you can make it.[/quote1245227495]
I was asleep, anyway I’ve re-setup my IRC client and I’m back on the channel. - AuthorPosts
