Hi to all my fellow Sammy users!
I am newly addicted… I can hardly believe what a neat little machine this NC10 is!
Up until last week my mobile life was limited to a 17″ HP Entertainment laptop and the HTC Tilt Windows Mobile Professional Cell Phone. My laptop was heavy and had a short battery life and my cell phone took too much effort other than checking my email, flickr account, and an occasional web browse in a pinch!
Well all that changed last Tuesday when my Sammy was delivered! This great site was one of the places I spent a lot of time while I was analyzing the choices in the netbook world.
I was very nervous about the screen blotches that others have reported. But after reading some reviews saying it was livable and after having a dark spot on my HP screen that shows up on white pages, I am happy to say my NC10 came blotch free!
So what have I done so far…. I downloaded Firefox and added a couple of plugins to it. I have run into some problems with Firefox eating up a lot of memory after it has been running a while with 4-6 tabs open. I found a site that gave some performance tuning tips. They seem to have helped! This is the site: http://howto.helpero.com/howto/Reduce-Firefox-Memory-Usage_4.html
I have installed Office Professional 2007. I have only have used Word and Excel on the Sammy but it seems to have no problems. I added the “Save As PDF” plugin from Microsoft. The install used 498 MB.
I will be installing Adobe’s Photoshop CS4, Lightroom 2, and Acrobat Standard 7. As well as Canon’s Raw Software. I don’t plan to do much photo editing but since photography is my main hobby, I would like to have the software available to me when out on trips just incase. And with the harddrive the size it is installing the Adobe products isn’t a problem to me.
I have read that many feel the memory upgrade isn’t necessary and some who did upgrade felt it wasn’t helpful. But with the little I have done so far I will be updating to 2 GB soon. I think it will be a must for my photo editing sessions. And I am a hopeless multitasker! That’s not going to change…FireFox was using almost 1/2 GB when it was running out of control. I started to get keyboard lag. That was what clued me in. Even after the tuning it still gets up to 150 MB with 5 taps open. Before I do that though I plan to clean up the started tasks and read more tuning tips. For sure some of the started tasks need to be disabled!
When I am out with my Sammy I either tether to my cell phone via bluetooth or ride on an available unsecured network. I purchased the Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse. It is a real joy! And I have ordered a custom bag from a seamstress on http://www.etsy.com. I wanted a bag that would work as a purse and not look too obvious!
So anyway..I am glad I found this forum. Thank you for all the help!! I know I have been longwinded but hoped you all would want to know my experiences so far! You won’t hear from me often as I tend to lurk unless I have something to share that would help the group.
Kindest Regards,
Donnita
