MemberI’ve read a lot of threads regarding using NC10 to play movies. Is there a thread that essentially takes me from a movie DVD on my shelf to watching it as a file on a plane (not with an external DVD player)? This would include backing up the DVD into a viewable file, transferring it to the NC10 and then watching it in something that isn’t so fuzzy that it wasn’t worth all the effort. I’ve read that you can get the NC10 to display 720 or even 1080, but most of it was over my head. Just looking for a “beginning to end” description of the whole process. Do I need to buy third party software to rip the dvd, then more to put it in a good format, then more to upgrade the NC10 to watch it? Great machine! Thanks!

MemberIt is pretty simple and is free. It assumes you have a desktop or a laptop with a DVD player.
PC:
Get and Install DVD43 – http://www.dvd43.com/
Get and Install Handbrake – http://handbrake.frMac:
Get and Install VLC – http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Get and Install Handbrake – http://handbrake.frUse Handbrake to create a file. I use the iPhone preset so it will work on both my iPhone and NC10.
But if you want to try higher res there are plenty of presets, or you can just increase the bitrate
on the iPhone one.Transfer the file to the NC10. I typically use Quicktime to play it… but other players also work…

MemberOK, got it. Now do I open dvd43 and run it? or does handbrake use it auto when I open handbrake. Also, and help in what settings are best for getting best quality on NC10 without getting the stutter screen? Thanks.

Great result with this. Thanks. I started converting a movie with Handbrake last night and this morning it had worked through 35 minutes. Any way to shorten this time without losing quality?February 8, 2009 at 10:28 am #182789Alfihar
ParticipantWhat is the spec of the computer you’re using to do the conversion on (processor)?
And what preset are you using for the converstion (settings)? The video codec H.264 (x264) will take a lot longer than if you use MPEG-4.
EDIT: Just ran a couple of quick tests on the speed of conversion on my computer, this is with the default iPhone & iPod Touch preset, just changing the video codec (yeah I know this isn’t perfect):
From Disc
H.264 (x264): ~50 fps
MPEG-4 (Ffmpeg): ~90 fps
MPEG-4 (XviD): ~70 fpsFrom Hard Drive
H.264 (x264): ~90 fps (CPU load ~100%)
MPEG-4 (Ffmpeg): ~320 fps (CPU load ~75%)
MPEG-4 (XviD): ~160 fps (CPU load ~60%)February 8, 2009 at 1:36 pm #182796ragman

My computer’s not as fast as yours! But I did get a much better rate with the Ffmpeg setting. It went from less than 20fps to 60 fps on a widescreen movie. Quality is hard to tell difference. Additionally, it seems that the “chapter advance” feature is available with ffmpeg and not with h.264. Or maybe I just unintentionally hit a different setting on the h.264 run.February 12, 2009 at 11:16 am #182791ian

[/quote1234436951]My good lady and I also bought a Sammy each with exactly the same purpose.
I use DVD Decrypter to create an image and then use DAEMON tools to mount the image so that I can play movies without the need for an external DVD drive. It really is that simple and I only create images of DVD’s we own.
I did try and burn the image of one movie back to a DVD disc but the problem I had was that the number of sectors available on the disc was too small – something like 2 1/2 million – whereas the movie was 3.something million.
I bought some Memorex DVD-R 4.7Gb 120min discs and I think that is my problem. They’re not big enough.
Anyone know what I should have bought?
Thanks and bye.

ParticipantYou’re probably going to need to use dual layer disks (8.5GB).
