MemberI was reviewing the FAQ on the Samsung site and spotted this:
” Does The Netbook Have An LED Backlit Display?
No. The netbook has a 10.2″ wide SuperBright© display with 1024X600 WSVGA (220nit) resolution, anti-glare finish and great viewing angles. “
I thought all of the netbooks had LED backlit displays for weight and energy use issues. Are there any advantages/disadvanatges to it not having an LED backlit display? Thanks.

MemberHopefully some else can give you a fuller answer but I know that the screen is very bright on full settings (I normally have it on 3 of 8 levels) and that the battery lasts a long time! So I don’t know what the pros and cons are but it seems good to me!

MemberOkay, now I am really confused. The Samsung press release states that:
Seeing is believing
The NC10’s 10.2†widescreen display is optimised to deliver a seamless visual experience on netbook. With a plethora of screen sizes in the netbook market, the NC10 breaks away with more viewing area than traditional netbook screens and allows you to enjoy photo-like image quality, greater viewing angles and better text legibility, reducing eye strain and, therefore, improving your experience. Using LED technology also means that the screen is thinner, up to 33% brighter, and uses much less power than traditional LCD screen. Even the durability of the system is better, because there are fewer breakable parts. How are they using LED technology if it is not LED backlit?
I have emailed Samsung this smae question, and will let you know what I hear back.

MemberWell, mine is certainly LED-backlit. I have seen this confusing info before. It IS LED-backlit.

MemberIf they state in their FAQ that there is no backlight it would seem that it is so. I would certainly be happy if thats so, as there is no backlight to fail.
Technology moves on, my LCD TV has both brightness and backlight settings. Even if the backlight is set to 0 it still has a bright picture, but whether 0 means off I don’t know.
Someone needs to take one apart but I am not offering!

MemberThis isn’t the only example of Samsung’s Marketing department not knowing what the Engineering department is doing. In the PDF brochure on the Samsung website, there is a photo showing SD cards, MMC cards, XD cards, and memory sticks and the text touts a “5-in-1 memory card reader.” As I’ve learned, the card reader only supports SD cards and MMCs.

MemberFrom what I’ve read various places, the NC10 does not have a LED backlit display. It’s what Samsung calls “superbright” but I’ve not seen LED in any of their specs. With LED being a big sales gimmick these days, I’d think it would be emphasized if the NC10 had it. But I don’t care. It’s a great screen with better viewing angles than I’ve seen on any portable.

MemberSamsung’s info on their website is incorrect. As someone else stated this is not the first time. On the Samsung website they also clearly state that the RAM is DDR2 800MHz, but I can guarantee that the memory inside is 667MHz. The screen is LED, all other info is wrong no matter where you read it, if some review states that it is not LED backlit, they have just taken Samsung’s word for it. The screen is SuperBright and LED, many other notebooks have this spec, so nothing strange here. Because of the quite high brightness and even brightness of the screen imho it can not be anything but LED backlit.

Agreed. I almost blind myself when I put the brightness to 8 (max); just to see what it looks like. I need to keep it on 1 or 2 for normal use. In comparison, my laptop, with a CCFL backlight, has a max brightness of 8, and I use it on 5 for normal use. For me, this is a clear indication of what backlight technology is in use.November 27, 2008 at 3:47 pm #171532BlackWhizz
MemberWell, um, How should i tell it.
The NC10 has a screen. thats obvious.
But a flatscreen has 2 parts.
– The display
– The backlitThe display is a 10,2″ TFT
The backlit is a Led backlit.November 27, 2008 at 5:04 pm #171517hef

superbright is a description of the manufacturing process and derivative type of led used.Admin edit: this forum is for all levels of user 🙂

MemberI second this opinion (and fact). A screeen can be both “SuperBright” LCD and “SuperBright” LED.
If someone can prove (which they can not ;)) that the Samsung NC10 does not have a LED backlit display I will eat up my hat (if I had one).[quote1227830540=hef]

MemberHere is what I emailed Samsung:
I saw the press release at the following sites:
http://www.markpascua.com/2008/09/21/samsung-nc10-102-inch-netbook/
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-16742-Samsung+kicks+out+its+new+10.2”+Netb
ook,+the+NC10.htmlThe FAQ is on the Samsung web site (question #14)
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/faqs/supportFaqList.do?group=computersperipher
als&type=mobilecomputing&subtype=netbook&model_nm=NP-NC10&prd_ia_cd=05012500&dis
p_nm=NC10-14GB&mType=&dType=D&vType=RNow, compare the wording from the original FAQ quoted in my original post to what Samsung has changed it to now:
“Does The Netbook Have An LED Backlit Display?
No. The netbook sold in the USA (NC-10) has a 10.2″ wide SuperBright© display with 1024X600 WSVGA (220nit) resolution, anti-glare finish and great viewing angles. If you are inquiring on an overseas model please visit http://www.samsungcomputer.com and select the country of origin.”
This seems to imply that some models sold outside the U.S. may have an LCD with LED backlighting but the U.S. models don’t. I have not received a response directly from Samsung, but I doubt it is a coincidence that this FAQ has been changed. Can any U.S. purchasers shed any “light” on this? Thanks.
