MemberHello all,
I’ve been using a couple of laptops for disco gigs because it’s much easier than lugging a whole stack of CDs around and two players. Trouble is one of my laptops keeps crashing as it’s fairly old. Most new laptops have Windows Vista installed and the latest version of my deejay software (DRS 2006) doesn’t work with Vista. I was wondering whether the NC10 would be up to the job? I don’t need to do any scratching or any other effects, just play each song or maybe sometimes a four hour playlist.
I know the on-board speakers aren’t up to much but I will be running the two netbooks through a mixing unit and PA system.
If anyone is using their NC10 for music, please let me know.

MemberHey,
i can’t help you much on this other than the fact music playback is clear and not jumpy…There is a sound engineer on here and he might be able to help if you need me to download any trial programs and test them just let me knowDecember 4, 2008 at 2:53 pm #173711jez
MemberI guess it’s hard to give a definite answer without testing. And like above – if you know a trial version of the software we can give it a go.
Generally though the NC10 runs most apps pretty well and I’d imagine audio wouldn’t be too much of a problem. Video might be a different story with some people reporting probs with certain playback although for me it works fine.
I think to give a definite answer someone needs to give it a go.

MemberWhat are the specs of the laptop where you’re running your DJ software on?

MemberThanks for the prompt reply folks.
Richard and Jez,
I’m not sure if they do a trial version of the complete package. Here’s their address though: http://www.drs2006.com When you’ve downloaded the software, after 30 minutes you will have to re-open the module and start again. They’ve been upgrading version 2 to version 3 for ages now but V3 (by far the better version) won’t work with Vista. That’s why I need an XP system.
I just found this on the site:
Quote:What are the minimum requirements and what do you recommend for the DRS 2006 radio automation software?
Minimum requirements for all Packages:
– Pentium II, Celeron or AMD 1 GHz
– Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP or Windows Vista 32 and 64 Bit
– 1 GB RAM
– No special soundcard, just Windows compatible. We haven’t found one that does not work with DRS 2006.
– Hard Disk. As much as you need for your audio files. DRS 2006 itself needs about 18 MB. Mp3 files take about 1 MB per minute.
– Graphic card which is able to transmit a resolution of 1024×768 by using 16 million colors (almost all do this)
– DirectX 9 or higher
– Windows Media Player 9 or higher
– Optional 100 MBit network adapterRecommended for all Packages:
– Intel or AMD Athlon >= 2 GHz
– Windows 2000, Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP or Windows Vista 32 and 64 Bit
– > 1 GB RAM

BlackWhizz,
My current laptop (made by Novatech) specs are as follows:
Intel Pentium M 2.GHz (It’s not a Dual Core – I bought it just before DC and C2Duo came out).
2GB Ram.
Win XP Pro.
100GB Hard drive.Unlike the NC10s, which I only want to use for the music (famous last words), I use my Novatech for just about everything.
BTW. I was going to order a couple of NC10s from QVC tomorrow night, that way I’ll be able to ‘Try before I buy’. If it doesn’t work, all I’ll lose is the postage.
HTH?

MemberHmm…1024×768. Netbook displays top out at 1024×600, but the graphics hardware itself is more than capable of running 1024×768. It’s just a question of whether or not the program will have trouble with the smaller vertical resolution, like if it’s hard-coded to not run on anything smaller than the minimum amount.

thats what i use on my other laptop, im pretty sure it’ll work fine on the nc10. Pm if u want any other info!December 4, 2008 at 9:04 pm #173716BlackWhizz
MemberWell, um. I think if the program is multicore optimized that it will fluently run on the Atom CPU.
Maybe you can try this app in compatibilty mode and run as admin in vista? Maybe that works?
If you dont know how to do it. Its kinda easy; Right click on the shortcut, click on Properitys and find a tab which contains compatibility modes. Then, check Run as administrator. Apply and ok, and try 😉

MemberThanks again folks,
Squonk,
I’ve run this program at different resolutions without a hitch.
Joeplease,
Thanks, but I’ve looked at a variety of deejay software and most are aimed at club deejays who want various effects. I know I said I needed it for ‘disco gigs’, but actually my style is basically aimed at the older person (60+) and garden parties.
BlackWhizz,
Many DRS users have tried to run the latest software on Vista but it just won’t open. Technical Support say their priority is to get V3 out of the beta stage before making it compatible with Vista. In the meantime they’ve brought out V2.2 for XP and Vista. Sadly, it’s nowhere near as good as V3. 🙁

Memberto directly answer the question,
yep it’ll run. the resolution shouldnt affect it at all.

Looks like I’ve got a problem here. The older, 2.11 version works fine, similar to watching a 4×3 film on a widescreen telly with a bit to spare on either side. Unfortunately, the newer 3.0 version is too big for the screen. The left and right edges are fine but about 4cm are missing from the bottom of the screen. Trouble is there are no scroll bars to adjust the picture and if I try to drag it up the screen, it just springs back to its original place.Guess I’ll just have to use the older version. Pity, apart from that the program works well on the netbook. 🙁
