Rainlendar: It’s simple, light and sits on your desktop. Has a load of skins to customise it to your theme, can synch from other applications like outlook, and is just generally awesome 🙂

Rainmeter also is a cool application, it allows for a lot more than just a calender too. Check it out.

Another option is via a widget engine (e.g. Yahoo Widgets, Google Desktop Gadgets), but that might be a bit of a bloated option.
