[Mods, please correct me if I put this in the wrong place]
I’ve seen on a number of netbook sites (maybe this one too, can’t remember) saying NFSU2 is playable. My results indicate otherwise.
Setup: Sammy NC10, 2GB Ram upgrade, latest intel drivers, all games patched to latest release.
Results: I tried both Need for Speed Underground and Need for Speed Underground 2. Both were set up at absolutely lowest display settings (no shadows, no fancy effects, low detail, etc.) and tried all available resolutions (including 640×480). Both games rendered without a hitch. Framerates also seemed to be smooth. HOWEVER, the time scale slowed wayyyy down. Like one second on the game clock (race timer) equaled anywhere from 2 to 4 seconds in real life, and varied based on track surroundings, nearby competitors, etc. Using bumper cam view improved matters (don’t need to render yourself) although not enough. The music and sound effects still ran smoothly (didn’t slow down). In terms of sluggishness NFSU and NFSU2 were about the same. So it’s like racing in slow motion with fluid framerates, rather than real-time with low frame rates. Kind of puzzles me, but in a brief search I couldn’t find a solution.
I also tried Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 (the one right before NFSU 1) and it seemed to play very well without the aforementioned issues. In agreement with postings elsewhere across the net. So NFSHP2 seems to be the cutoff in my trials. I didn’t bother testing my old versions of NFS Porsche Unleashed or High Stakes or others.
