I’ve been reading a lot of reviews – most of them by now, i guess 🙂 – and did some calculations on the reported screen resolutions for NC10 and NC20. My concern here is whether i should get the NC10 or the NC20 based on display size and resolution.
If the NC10 has 1024 x 600 pixels, then the aspect ratio is not the same as on the NC20 with its 1280 x 800. (1.7 vs 1.6) I guess the NC10 should be 1024 x 640 for the ratio to even out against the NC20.
I think I would choose the NC20 if it can play HD video (up to 720p, anything bigger would be pointless imo).
My desktop display is a 21.1″ with 1600 x 1200 and i worry that I wont use the NC10 due to the much lower resolution (compared to my desktop display).
What’s your experience using the NC10 in everyday work in regards to display size and resolution? Any ideas and comments wold be really appreciated.February 20, 2009 at 12:14 pm #184517TCMuffinMemberWelcome to the Forum, Happyning 🙂
My desktop has a 24″ monitor and my laptop has a 17″ (1920 x 1200) screen. Obviously, working on a 10″ screen is a different experience to working on one of my bigger screens.
I mostly use my NC10 for web access, emails, and network troubleshooting. For these purposes – the 10″ screen is fine, but I wouldn’t want to do a lot of image manipulation, web design, or intensive word processing on such a small screen.

Thank you TCMuffin for your input and the warm welcome.
I’ve been experimenting with firefox a bit. Running ff in full screen (key F11) i can gain a couple of pixels top and bottom of the screen, which I see as the most limiting factor with the lower resolution display.
I’ve also heard that the NC20 struggles with 720p videos so I’m leaning towards the NC10 atm.Beach: awesome to hear about running the nc on a hdtv. which resolution do you run at?

my nc10 is set to 1280×768. although my tv is telling me its displaying at 1024×768. in any case i find this setting outputs at the best visually and i can see webpages in quite a large area and without distortion, it really is just like having a 42″ lcd monitor its crystal sharp and runs at 85hz. i have needed to increase the text sizes using the firefox options and on windows control panel.
depends how close you sit to the tv i guess for how big you make the text.February 20, 2009 at 4:13 pm #184520TCMuffinMember[quote1235146343=beach]

I have 2x 26″ LCD monitors on my Desktop. remember that at 10.2″ and 1024×600= around 6000dpi
where as 21.1 at 1600×1200= aprox 4200dpiso technically its higher def. and you can make things smaller.
I love the NC10. i too was worried about the screen size untill i bought it. and i love it. my dad has a samsung r7 ( 17″) and its ridiculous compared to the sammy. 10.2 is perfect.

This depends on what you mean by everyday work. I, for example, mostly use it to surf the Internet, read email, look things up in PDFs, and play old video games. It works fine for all of that. I wouldn’t want to do hours upon hours of graphic editing or desktop publishing work on it, though I have done both of those things in small amounts with no problems. The size doesn’t bother me at all; it’s very easy to see things on the screen. The low resolution has been an issue for some (large dialog boxes, for example), but I haven’t run into any real problems yet.
Hope this helps.

Happy to help 🙂Some good tips here for maximising screen space in Firefox.

Or use Google Chrome. Faster and much more space. Ideal for netbooks 🙂As for screen space though. For netbook use, 600 pixels is fine for me. HD videos are fine at 720p too (especially with the right codecs installed). Okay they’re scaled down slightly, but not losing much. You might think a small display won’t be of benefit with HD, but playing some ripped DVDs that I own vs some HD material, there’s a clear obvious difference. Maybe because you tend to sit quite close to a netbook.
Also you can hook up the NC10 to a 1080p HDTV via VGA and it drives a 1920×1080 resolution with no problems at all. Struggles with 1080p files though, but fine with 720p scaled to 1080.
Anyway, if you’re planning on using a netbook as your main computer at home, then perhaps a 600 pixel display is a bit small. I have a full desktop in the bedroom and a desktop replacement laptop in the living room if I want a big display though. The netbook is used occasionally at home mainly because it’s quick and easy to get up and running with it for a bit of browsing. It’s mainly used on the move and for business.
