In case you aren’t aware, Microsoft’s ClearType font-smoothing utility is not enabled as a default. To enable it, go to Control Panel / Display Properties / Appearance / Effects.
I just did that yesteday and can already notice the differents.
Being new to Windows, I was discouraged until discovering the ClearType option. It’s hard to imagine it’s not the default. Text is so much more pleasing and readable on the NC10 with ClearType turned on.
I’ve just remembered that there is a downloadable Microsoft PowerToy that helps you fine-tune ClearType to optimise it for your needs. You can find it (along with other PowerToys such as Tweak UI and a Taskbar Magnifier) at

How ironic! I was just about to say about TweakUI in another post lol. I’ve made my NC10 look like a Mac using RocketDock and TweakUI (and a nice wallpaper and hiding the taskbar). Great for hiding pesky desktop icons (erhhmmm RECYCLE BIN).
Good post and tips – thanks 🙂
I think I’ve just done something that has uoset the settings: I’m getting very odd unevenness in text – some characters, or lines of text, showing thickening. It could be that it’s always been like that, but I’ve had the NC-20 for over two months, and I think I’d have noticed before now. It isn’t Cleartype – I just tried that, and although I could see what it does, it doesn’t cure this particular problem. Help, what have I done?

Changed the resolution?
Altered the refresh rate?
I’d guess refresh rate.
