I’ve been reading a lot of forums to see if the NC10 or similar Atom N270 netbooks can play HD files, and looks like it can! With free software! I’ve tested a few files i’ve downloaded from the internet, and it works! (MKZ and MOV files, 720p)
There seems to be a few ways to do it:
1. Google and Download “K-Lite Codec Software” pack (comes with Window Media Player Classic). This is the one i’ve tested, playing the HD files with WMP classic!
2. Can download “CCCP” pack and CoreAVC Codec (see MSI Wind forum thread below for instructions):

January 8, 2009 at 10:53 am #178936FreddyMemberI use VLC myself and play 720p movies with no problem, I have however read that some ppl say that Windows Media Player + the right codec (like K-Lite) performs better but I have no problem using VLC “out of the box”.
I can almost play 1080p movies but it’s a bit too sluggish, to do this the NC10 probably needs to be overclocked but I am yet to find a utility that can do this. Any ideas?
What I would like to be able to do is to overclock the NC10 when watching 1080p movies on my TV, battery life is not important then as I would the plug the NC10 in to the main.

I downloaded a 720p movie taken with Sony T500(?) camera (.mov file), but couldn’t play it at all with VLC or WMP9 or WMP classic, until i installed the K-Lite codec pack. Then it ran smoothly!
However, when i go back and play my movies (DV file, .avi, from digital camcorder), there are extra cracks and noises. I’m going to have to experiment some more. maybe try the CoreAVC code and CCCP.
But at least we know 720p movies are possible, so we’re good for another 2-3yrs before needing to buy a new Netbook!

January 9, 2009 at 7:37 am #178941yammer2002MemberUPDATE: It seems all you really need is to install the FREE “Basic” version of K-Lite Codec Pack, and you can play any 720p HD file with Windows Media Player (any version, WMP9 or WMP11 or WMP classic). Wow, it really is that easy!
You can download the “Basic” K-Lite Code pack from here:

[/quote1231510201]Of course, using the internal monitor, you’d see no difference whatsoever between 720 and 1080p… given that the monitor is, well, “600p” if you like.
Would you really want to use a netbook to playback 1080p video to a TV? Seems kinda cruel to the netbook to me, and goes beyond its intended purpose by far.
I’m not sure it’s even so much to do with processing power as it is to do with the puny onboard graphics chip.
April 10, 2009 at 3:36 am #178939AmatsuMemberI just wanted to share something I found out in the CoreAVC codec. If your 720p videos are still going slow sometimes, in scenes of high movement for example…go to coreavc configuration and set the Deblocking to “Skip Always”.
From what I have read, this option tries to improve pixelation and it may use some cpu power, I just tried it with a couple of scenes in different videos and it really works.
By the way, don’t try to stream 720p over wi-fi, transfer rate is not enough in some scenes, try to transfer the movie to the hard disk before playing.
I’m using Media player classic and latest coreavc.
April 10, 2009 at 9:25 am #178944simonknMemberHi Guys, just a thought on the HD front. I’ve got Sony’s HDR-TG3E HD camcorder. Do you think i could load the software onto the NC10 to allow me to download AVCHD files from the camcorder to the netbook? It suggests a Pentium 4 but mentions a Pentium 3 for playback.
I’m not looking to edit files, just get them off the paultry 4GB MStick and “maybe” have a look at them.
Perhaps if i record in 720 and not 1080p it would be ok?Any thoughts?

Installing the software and downloading the files should be no problem, if it’s only asking for a Pentium 3 then the NC10 may handle it.There’s no harm in trying.
April 10, 2009 at 2:04 pm #178945simonknMemberthat’s what I thought – what the hell, let’s give it a try!
April 10, 2009 at 5:41 pm #178946simonknMemberAnd the results are in… Really not that bad actually!
Considering I shot HD-HQ mode, the 30 mins I shot are on the Sammy and playing really quite well. There’s a little jitter on the really action-packed scenes but for a simple review of the days shooting the combination of Sony HDR-TG3E and Samsung NC10 is a fantastic one!
Great hoiliday material!April 28, 2009 at 1:02 pm #178947stormyMemberHi guys, just noticed this thread.
Is the K-Lite codec pack and WMP an easy way to be able to playback 720p TV episodes?
Seems I have read half a dozen threads and I am more confused. I don’t really want to have to pay for a CoreAVC codec so a free solution would be nice.
Cheers,
April 28, 2009 at 2:31 pm #178935jezMemberHi Stormy, I haven’t followed this myself as it is not something I use, but I would definitely like to get some of this down into one page for future reference!
Either add it to the [Wiki]Samsung NC10 FAQ[/Wiki] or maybe a page of it’s own [Wiki]HowTo:Play high definition video on the Samsung NC10[/Wiki]
April 28, 2009 at 6:25 pm #178948stormyMemberWell I will have a play when mine comes but I assume I will be going over old ground so some guys with experience should pipe up. 🙂
Thanks
April 28, 2009 at 10:06 pm #178943siupiuMemberI got some 720p mkv file, initially i can’t play it smoothly with WMP, or WMP classic (come with k-lite), after I use powerDVD 9, it can play smoothly..
