MemberI’ve put a bootable libux distibution on a 16Gb SD card. However I cant get the NC10 to recognise it in the boot menu.
If I put a USB stick in, it recognises that.
Any ideas?
TIA

ParticipantUnfortunately booting from SD (or other) memory cards is currently not supported by the BIOS.

MemberAs above, it is not currently possible to boot from an SD card on the NC10. Perhaps this is something Samsung may address is future BIOS releases?

Yes should work fine, you need to set the USB boot priority in the BIOS. The NC10 will treat the SD card in a USB reader in the same way as an external hard driver or memory stick.January 22, 2009 at 4:40 pm #180869Alfihar

I have been unable to boot from an SD card in a USB card reader, I’m not sure if this is another limitation of the BIOS or due to the particular card readers/cards which I own, as I tried with a few.January 22, 2009 at 4:43 pm #180867adatay92

In that case, I’m happy to be corrected because this isn’t something I’ve actually tried myself. In theory though there is no reason why it shouldn’t work!?January 22, 2009 at 6:29 pm #180873Camo Yoshi
MemberIn theory it could work, but for now you’re better off with a USB drive, They’re getting pretty cheap nowadays. I saw a 4GB Lexar Firefly Jump Drive for 13USD at OfficeMax. But it sounds like you need at least 16GB of space, so I recommend the following:

EDIT: Most Reviews get 7MB/s via USB 2.0 with this flash drive.

MemberBe very careful to check the read and write speeds, they are often very slow but some are worse than others. Most devices which do not advertise their read and write speeds do so for a reason… if they have a good speed they will be very sure to advertise it! 🙂

MemberI would suggest putting the boot loader with drivers onto the USB key, boot from that and then let Linux install off the SD card. Once the boot loader is going you should have access to it.

MemberAbout booting from SD Cards – it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been wrong, but I feel sure that SD /MMC/ Sony Types are all marked Removable Media in the MBR (or initial sectors of the Card) which is why Windows will not recognize them as ‘Hard Drives’ – When you modify an USB Stick, the particular program changes that part of the USB device, to make it ‘Read’ like an HDD; but it depends on the Stick and the program, they will not all change the relevant data.
Brian – P.S I’ve been researching this for exactly that sort of info, so I CAN eventually boot from an SD Card. -
