I agree with denniszen that if the stickers were MUCH plainer and not so try-hard to be some strange weird and not so wonderful design then I would consider one. The link I posted was just the first sticker based design I found so that’s not a comment on my taste, more my haste in being quick to find a picture lol.
A plain design which didn’t exclude the samsung logo in the middle might be quite nice, that way too you could introduce many more colours than blue, black and white!
…
Anybody want to start producing some of these? I can do the designs no problems (am a graphic designer) it’s the printing I’ll get stuck at 🙂
November 19, 2008 at 3:13 pm #168749jonbadMemberJust taken delivery of the NC10 in black! 😀
So, first impressions on the black netbook are…. I love the black, the shiny non matte top is fine and it doesn’t look “tacky” as some other have sugested it might. Actually it looks very classy in it’s glossy black lid, similar to that look on a black PSP – doesn’t look cheap, just looks good. The bad news is that yes, it is a fingerprint magnet. However it’s not too bad as they don’t show up too much since it’s a black lid rather than a lighter colour where they would be more apparent.
I will still consider a sticker but to be honest I’m liking how neat and exceptionally classy it’s looking on my desk whilst charging.
It certainly looks much more corporate in black than the white one I used.
It doesn’t look like a netbook at all, it looks just like a small laptop – i recently bought (for the boss at work) an IBM X series and that cost about £1000. This little samsung LOOKS as good (although obviously hasn’t got quite as good specification) and as we all know is under £300.I suppose what I’m trying to say is that if you were a business person wanting a small portable laptop which can perform your usual tasks; email, internet, skype, word, excel then why bother spending £1000 for a couple of extra screen inches – still no optical drive too – when you can spend £300 and get something just as good looking if not better and just as capable in those tasks listed above.
Back to the point of this post however – now I have my black NC10, I definitely am glad I chose it. That said I think I would have been equally happy with the white version, it’s just less suitable to both work and play whereas the black edition is great in both worlds…
November 19, 2008 at 5:17 pm #168735jezMemberYay congrats!
I definitely agree with that, it looks much more like a “real” notebook than others do and when I show it to people they are like “it’s that light?” “battery lasts THAT long” “It cost WHAT?”. Some of my colleagues have not even heard of the “netbook” genre so it’s a real eye opener for them!
I look forward to finding out how you get on – perhaps a new thread or something! I’d love to do a “user review” cat on the front page if you wanna whack together a few hundred words!
Or if anyone else does…
November 19, 2008 at 7:15 pm #168743denniszenMemberJonbad and Jez, happy for you guys! Here in the States, we don’t even know if we’re going to get the black model. No announcement or news about it. But may be next year. I will just drool with envy with what you have.
Jez, yes, there are only few people who know netbooks. And we’re like pacesetters now who will spread the word about how good it is and hopefully, everybody wins in the sense that these companies will outdo themselves and give us improvements year after year, helping the prices go down or remain as is with new added features every year. everybody wins!
November 19, 2008 at 8:04 pm #168750jonbadMemberLol, yeah I do write a lot when I get going! That’s perhaps a good idea to write mini reviews from users Jez, if it’s easy enough for you to implement then that’d be cool. Kinda like the review feature on Ebuyer or Amazon perhaps?
I think without doubt that netbooks are becoming well known. Simply put; if they weren’t then nobody would be making them. The fact that nearly every manufacturer under the sun is, is evidence that they’re popular as well as big money.
What I particularly love about this NC10 though, is that on the basis that Samsung are making big money on these things….. I can’t see where they’re cutting corners to make their profits!! Like jez agreed, it’s a small laptop rather than something from a different kind of category (esp. in black) i.e. netbooks. I have no doubt people will think it’s £1000 or something, much like the IBM X series costs.
RE: Black model in the USA, I’m sure you’ll get it just no idea when! A bit like the blue one in the UK lol.
November 19, 2008 at 10:19 pm #168769RsaeireMemberI collected my NC10 today in black and I am so happy with it!
First of all, the glossy black looks great, but, as everyone has mentioned, attracts fingerprints like a magnet. I don’t mind too much, as it is definitely worth it for the overall aesthetic.
The initial start-up took a while, due to the Windows XP setup, and I had to restart about 3 times due to the laptop configuration and recovery setup. Once done though, I was greeted to the Windows desktop and just took everything in. I instantly noticed the lower resolution of the screen, due to the fact that about 8 icons appeared in the system tray, but that won’t be an issue for me as I don’t plan on browsing websites much. It will definitely take some time getting used to the low resolution, however, the screen does look great; even with the plastic cover left on.
One thing that amazed me was how bright the screen was. I’ve read countless reviews whereby battery life is given based upon Wi-Fi and Bluetooth usage, screen brightness etc, but I don’t know how anyone can use the brightness above 2, possibly 3 max, as it is blinding any higher. I would no doubt need to turn up the brightness when outdoors, but I don’t plan on using it anywhere but inside, so I will be leaving it on its current setting of 1.
I plan on buying a few accessories such as a more robust case, external DVD drive and I also plan on buying 2GB of ram; as I plan on using Photoshop and Dreamweaver, the more ram the better.
All in all, I am thoroughly impressed with the Samsung NC10. The colour is great, the look and feel of the laptop is perfect and it is so light that I will probably lose it without noticing; not something I’m hoping ever happens.
November 20, 2008 at 5:50 am #168744denniszenMemberWill you void warranty when you upgrade to 2gm yourself?
Btw, is there a SIM card slot in the computer? I think I saw one in a picture in another site.

[/quote1227167338]1. I don’t know I would suggest you check with the official Samsung site just in case.
2.Yes, there is a actually a little slot behind the battery! Where this leads and what needs to be done to get it wroking I don’t know!November 20, 2008 at 10:01 am #168751jonbadMember2GB ram upgrade doesn’t void the warranty so long as you buy the ram specified in the manual.
From other sources I understand the 3G slot is inactive on the UK model. I think Samsung plan on releasing several versions of the NC10, such as with Vista and 3G capability built in. Lastly our models have the slot (but non functioning) as they’ve planned ahead and it’s cheaper to not have to change the moulding in the factory for them.
Whether or not an upgrade kit is made available, I should think unlikely to come from Samsung themselves, rather it’d come from a 3rd party supplier and will void your warranty if you’re trying to fit it…. if it ever happens that is.November 20, 2008 at 11:43 am #168776M4rkSp4rKMemberI was also stuck on the black or white question and, for me, it came down to usability. Since I expect to use my NC10 in low-light conditions (coaches, planes, bed), I found that I could read the white keyboard more easily than the black. (Also, it’s easier to see it on my sofa and it hopefully won’t get sat on!)
November 20, 2008 at 11:54 am #168752jonbadMemberM4rkSp4rK: Point well made. I definitely agree the white keyboard is easier to see than the black one in low light conditions. That said in low light conditions I have a desk lamp to illuminate the keys and surroundings (but not too bright) and also the black is nicer if watching a film – I found the white keys glared and were distracting.
November 23, 2008 at 4:57 pm #168778TheoMemberI’m looking at buying the equivalent to this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Luxury-Black-Leather-Premium-Case/dp/B001ECGTGM/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227459172&sr=8-10 once one is released for the NC10.
They already do one for the Dell Mini 9 so shouldn’t be to long to wait
November 23, 2008 at 5:54 pm #168777FreddyMemberFor me the choice was easy, I liked the white one from the start and the white was available first. I do not regret my decision after looking at pictures of the black one. The blue is no option so here is a short Pros/
Cons list for Black vs White version:White version:
Pros:
Well, it’s white 😉
Matte finish lid
Keyboard white-design looks nicer in my opinion.Cons:
Not black 😉Black version:
Pros:
Well, guess what – it’s black 😉Cons:
Glossy lid, not good. Fingerprint magnet.
Uglier keyboard design in my opinion, do not understand the implementation of blue color on some of the keys.
Not white 😉So in my opinion the white wins because of the matte finish lid and the nicer looking keyboard. Browse some pictures and you’ll see what I mean.
November 23, 2008 at 7:59 pm #168765GalegoMemberThe Glossy lid is not as bad as one might think. It is actually growing on me and love the contrast between the glossy lid black and the black matt in the inside.
The black has a nice LAPTOP feeling, very professional looking.
I find the white more like flashier and lacks that LAPTOP feeling.
November 23, 2008 at 9:39 pm #168753jonbadMemberHaving owned the black one for the past week or so and starting a “mad” thread relating to modding the lid to be a matte black I’m thinking that I’m annoyed at Samsung for making it a glossy lid. It is apparently a big deal that it’s glossy for most people (I will say I am getting annoyed with some smudged finger prints that are determined not to be wipes off – hence my mod idea) and I think it would have made life and choices so much simpler had it been a matte style lid. Reviews have also mentioned how great the matte finish of the white nc10 is, and a breath of fresh air from the glossy lids of common. It’s annoying to think Samsung went to the bother of making the white one matte and then the equal bother of making the black one glossy!
Arrgghh!
lol, so anyways, I am reconsidering the white one, although if my mod works then I think I’ll have the worlds only matte topped black NC10 which would be better perhaps than the white one. 😀
My views on the white one are that although not quite as “laptop” professional as I’ve stated in my previous opinionated posts (!) I am starting to think it is really great. These netbooks after all were made for Net use, ie email and internet – so far mine’s certainly been subjected to that rather than programs and for me the white is perfect in that respect. It is still classy and beautiful and knowing mac owners, I am sometimes envious of their gleaming white machines (even though mac’s have all gone silver). I’m really wondering whether I’d have been better off with the white one even though I love the black – somehow it’s just not original whereas the white is!?
