Black or white still haven’t decided…
White does look cool and the mate finish looks great.
Black is also cool but it looks just like many other laptops, and the glossy top it is making my decision going for white
Would the white get too dirty? (I wash my hands regularly…)
does the fingerprints in the glossy top be irritating me all the time?
Does the glossy black feels more “cheap” than the matte white?Too bad I could only get the nc10 on white in my hands (in a local currys) – Decision time…
Jez I know you “handled” both, what is your feel? did I read somewhere in this forum that you regret not going for the white?
[/quote1226981049]November 18, 2008 at 4:14 am #168739denniszenMemberI just came from a computer store and looked at all the glossy finished BLACK netbooks. Looks cheap,as if it’s trying too hard to be noticed. Also fingerprints all over. I cannot compare the white samsung i see in photos with anything in the store, but the matte makes it look classier, and we know white is easier to see without a backlight. Anyone who got the white one, please tell us what you think. Check out this link:
November 18, 2008 at 11:42 am #168746jonbadMemberI’m still waiting for my black NC10 to arrive which was ordered last Friday. I can wait the delivery time, didn’t need it at that exact instant!
I have seen the white one (a PCW worker showed me their own) and I thought it looked very nice indeed. When looking at it, he put it next to the Advent and MSI netbooks and it by far looked like a proper mini laptop compared to the toyish looks of the other two.
The white finish definitely stood out, however it was that which made it look worse to me than the black one. In effect it makes it look less professional and more of a play laptop (not a toy) but something for just mucking about on. The matte finish on the top was definitely a nice touch.Yesterday I was in Cambridge. The Curry’s Digital shop in the shopping centre has the black samsung on display (albeit a really terrible display, it was like looking at it in the dark it was on the second shelf and dingy lol).
Anyway, the first thing that struck me was that I couldn’t find it. I was looking for it, but didn’t notice which one it was amongst the others besides it. Had to look for the name! (perhaps to do with dingyness lol).
When found though, definitely the nicest of those there although I still maintain the ACER ASPIRE ONE is the best looking netbook for under £200 for the base model.
So, the black one, in dingy light and with the lid up (which, lets be honest, is what you usually see when working on a laptop, how often do you actually look at the top of your laptop lid???) definitely looked very nice. They didn’t have a battery plugged into it which made the hinges look funny but that’s irrelevant. In essence it looks like a small laptop, whereas the others look like a big childs toy. The black finish with the silver edge definitely added a touch of class and somehow the Samsung seems more of a finished design.Compared the the white one, the black is definitely more understated. I like the white version as it is that much more overstated, however knowing someone with a white mac and thinking back to the old days of beige computers, I am sure that (especially with the matter top) gradually the colour will fade gently to a subtle beige colour. Maybe this would look nice?!
In other words then, if you want a bit of flare go for the white laptop, you won’t be dissapointed.
If you want a more laptop looking netbook, go for the black unit which still has that touch of class but is that much more understated.Compare it to an IPOD if you like, people who used the white headphone cables often had their ipods stolen, whereas those with black headphone cables were mostly left alone despite their unit being the same thing!
Hope I’ve made a vague sense!
Oh one other thing, the PCW guy who showed me his White Samsung said he’d bought it for his girlfriend to use… it is a little more girly, but in the same way as macs are loved by girls – doesn’t mean guys can’t use and love them too!
November 18, 2008 at 3:08 pm #168740denniszenMemberJonbad,
Now that you pointed out the girly factor in the white samsung, i’m having second thoughts about my initial assessment of the white samsung. not that there’s anything wrong with it being girly, but it’s just not me.
also, white computers have never been corporate looking, but i was thinking, the matte finish would somehow change that. i would really prefer black, if it’s not so glossy, which is really tacky to me. hmmm, i think i would have to check them out physically, might take forever here in the united states, but may be worth the wait, if i can’t decide which one to get. i hope anyone here can post the glossy black or blue ones. i saw one photo but you can hardly see it. thanks.
November 18, 2008 at 7:53 pm #168761GalegoMemberdenniszen,
Check these pics here for the black. Sorry for the size, just want you to have a good look at the black. They are not my pics by thte way (just to clarify any possible questions). I found them on google from a UK user.

November 18, 2008 at 8:00 pm #168762GalegoMemberNow my views on the white/black thing. I personaly prefer the black and I would never consider to buy electronic white stuff, I personally (this is my own opinion) found them girly. But then again this is MY own taste. I am sure that lot of guys love these machines in white, nothing wrong about it.
All my desktop, laptops, etc have been black and would like to keep it black on the NC10. I think black wears out less than the black, glossy or not glossy.November 18, 2008 at 8:29 pm #168763GalegoMemberFew more pics which I found on the net, hope the ower does not mind me posting them here.
November 18, 2008 at 9:07 pm #168757rmcgandaraMemberyes I guess all the opinions are similar.
I was very close to get the white, but in the end decided for the black…
i might be tempted to get a white later on… It happend with the DS and PSP I got both white and black versions.
I still don’t know which I prefer – I like them both!😀
November 18, 2008 at 10:12 pm #168734jezMemberlol I guess buying both is one solution! One for alternative days of the week!
November 18, 2008 at 11:41 pm #168774BeckyMemberInitially, I wanted a blue one. The promo shots look very classy and the colour is quite rich. However, I know promo shots aren’t always truly representative, so I’m a bit nervous going for something I haven’t seen in the real world.
I saw the white one in PC World a few days ago and I thought it looked very nice, so I have asked my hubby to go for that one. I know many have said it looks girly, but that’s fine with me as I am a girl! 😀
November 19, 2008 at 1:35 am #168747jonbadMemberLol, this is a truly fascinating debate!
It’s amazing we can all manage to decide that we’d like an NC10 over the multitude of competitors but when it comes to the colour we’re completely stuck – mostly because Samsung annoyingly did not opt for the same (great) matte finish on the black model as exists for the white model!
Maybe stickers/designs are the way forward to customise and in effect hide the glossy black lid?

Thanks for the photos. Inside it looks like a Thinkpad, esp. the keyboard. Nice. Outside, though, it looks like it’s covered in some plastic.
November 19, 2008 at 2:45 am #168742denniszenMemberJonbad,
Yes, I agree. I think it’s the best netbook from all the reviews ans specs on it, but it’s interesting that because it’s nearly perfect, we’re all making a big fuzz about color. I thought the lid or cover in the photos here are in plastic but I would guess it’s just the reflection. As for the cover, well, I would consider a simple design that doesn’t draw too much attention, something more neutral and corporate looking.

I owed the Eee Pc 1000H for 3 weeks and I did not have any problem with the glossy lid. My major problems came from the inside which is also glossy.
If you keep your lid clean, come on guys it is not that hard, your netbook should look shine and awsome everyday.
