MemberBeing from a slightly earlier generation than most of you I’ve never been much for gaming. But reading some of the threads here, and seeing Jez’ item on Trackmania, I thought I’d give the latter a go.
My wife is already regretting this action as I’ve quickly found how addictive it becomes, but already feel frustrated by the limitations of control by keypad. A gamepad appears to be the answer, but I have no idea which is best, and googling hasn’t helped that much for once. So I turn to you guys for advice.
Whilst I’m not about to have it take over my life it needs to be robust and comfortable to hold (if it’s of any relevance, my hands aren’t especially big but I do have long fingers). I might take it away with me to while away nights in hotels when I travel for work, so light weight would be good, compactness a bonus.
Whilst price isn’t a huge issue I wouldn’t say no to cheaper. Any thoughts on which current model is the best value?

MemberXbox 360 Controller.
Comes with a normal USB connection.
Some games need a bit of configuring with third party software such as Xpadder, but it is a nice solid controller.
In two flavours – wired or wireless (the wireless requires an additional reciever) and is available in numerous colours.

Memberagreed the Xbox 360 controller is by far the best pad.
all games for windows games support it without any need for setup.

[/quote1232576739]only if you have the wireless controller…that trick doesn’t work with the wired unless it is plugged into the xbox.

MemberI bought one of these off Play because I wanted something a bit smaller than my 360 pad for portability reasons. It’s a nice little pad! Link

MemberI like the WII mote idea but I haven’t done it yet. Simple bluetooth hack to get it rolling. I like it because White on White. 🙂 360 Controller is bulky though. I love to use it with the console though.

[/quote1232626397]thats not correct, you will have the controller synced to your netbook if thats what you are using it on, it cant be synced to both devices at once so will only work with the one its currently synced to.

MemberI’d like to get a small USB gamepad with just a d-pad and buttons, but haven’t had much luck so far. (Admittedly, I haven’t done a lot of searching either; it’s a low-priority thing.)

Memberhow about the classic wired controller that you can get for the wii?

[/quote1232647481]I thought of using that but its got a proprietary connection and it needs the wiimote to work. Of course you could use it through the wiimote on the NC10 bluetooth.

[/quote1232647609]I was after the same thing as you (for SNES/Megadrive etc) and there wasn’t much I could find that would ship to the U.K. However if you live in the U.S. there is a neat little gamepad I found called the Genius Maxfire Pandora:
Cheap at $13.99 and a great compact design (it’s foldable). Has good reviews but unfortunately I can’t get one as Newegg don’t ship internationally.

Microsoft Sidewinder Plug N Play
Yeah it’s old but it’s been my favourite gaming pad. It’s cheap too.

I recently picked one of these up. It’s nice and compact, but not a fantastic controller. Feels kind of cheap. Good enough when an analog stick is required, but a far cry from my xbox 360 and logitech rumblepad controllers. Main problem with the analog stick is it’s quite stiff and has a short throw, meaning you can’t feather the analog signal very well. Only a little better than a d-pad in practice for analog-controlled games. Would I buy it again? Yes. But its use will pretty much be playing racing games on travel. I’ll still be playing genesis and nes emulators with the keyboard wasd. -
