OUTATIME
MemberI’ve just started looking into instailling Picasa on my NC10. Mainly because it looks so darn pretty, but also because it’s so easy to upload to Picasa web albums.
It’s not *too* big a program (I’m really trying to keep my Sammy fast and neat without loading it up with bloated programs), I think about 100megs all in when installed, but I wanted to know if you think it’s worth using (like I say, I’m very new to it).
A couple of concerns I’ve had about Picasa are that if you make edits or add effects to a picture it alters the original. With little or no warning.
I’d much prefer if it would ask if you want to change the original or save to a new file. I like to keep the original copy of a picture untouched and always work on copies. I know it keeps a copy of the original that you can revert back to, but it seems a little convoluted for my liking…Secondly, the image editing functions are pretty impressive, but there’s no way to make a new image and work with layers etc. It’s just limited to changing one, single original image at a time.
Anyway, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on Picasa.
Thanks again,
Alex.

MemberI use Picasa for basic stuff only and only whilst working (printing at equestrian events) It works great for this. It is the only time I shot JPG.
I agree though that being asked if you want to make changes to the original would be a good feature.

MemberTa for the reply Britman;
Yeah, the fact that it always messes with the original is what’s holding me back.
Using it “on the go” as you do, would you advise I give it a shot for the web-uploading?
Does it run well enough on the NC10?
Can you upload pictures at the original size, or are they compressed and resized as standard?
(Apologies for all the follow-up questions…)

MemberI can’t say how it works for uploading pictures having never done it. But I’m sure it’ll be fine, works ok on the images I have, all large jpegs of about 6 megs each.
If I was you give it a try over the weekend, take some pics, edit them and then try uploading. And if you plan on using 3G, try uploading with that.

MemberI’m not sure if this is a special setting in Picasa, but my Picasa does save originals in a separate subfolder which is unvisible unless you make system files and folders visible under Explorer. Then when I make changes to photos, I get the option to “save to disk” on the right side of the folder name. Hope it helps.

MemberThat’s more like it, Nuttiplutt… awesome.
Which version do you use?

MemberI’m using Picasa 3 with absolutely no problems. It’s useful that it syncs online so you always have a back up and looks great when viewing photos.

[/quote1234711881]Hey Gays, thanks for the reply.
Can you upload a picture at the original size, or does it always size them down for upload?
I take large HD, widescreen pictures and I’m much prefer if they were uploaded at their original size and resolution.

MemberOriginal size and resolution as far as I’m aware.

MemberI’m also using Picasa 3 and yes, under options and web album, you can choose original size or resizing. Maybe you should check what the standard setting is. In my Picasa, it’s set to scale to 1600 pixels.

MemberI’m not to sure how it alters the original, but I suspect it actually doesn’t really do that and instead uses some kind of “sidecar” file. It’s just from the user interface it looks like it has altered the original.
Reason being that you can actually undo the changes it makes, even some time later, and also if you open the original JPG in another app just off the hard disc, you will find it doesn’t have any of the changes Picasa has made.
There is an export option in Picasa which will export the file with the changes and I think it has the option to save under a different name and it backs up the original too.
