Well, my blue sammy arrived about half an hour ago (I only ordered it last Wednesday night, so I think Dixons served me well).
I am currently charging it up. I am one of those people who has a minor panic whenever he sees an instruction booklet, as they always seem so daunting.
I was a little surprised that the there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of operating instructions. So I would like some advice as to what to do next. I don’t have wi fi at home yet (altohugh I have a router on order). So I probably wnon’t be able to connect to the internet until tomorrow when I go to work..
One question I would like to know is that I read somewhere that you can use a trial of Microsoft office. Is this on the disc or do you have to download it?

Start up the machine and the Windows install and setup will begin. Follow the instructions and choose language, time setting etc.
I have not seen anything about an Office trial, perhaps you can get a trial version on the Microsoft website.December 2, 2008 at 12:48 pm #173322jezMemberTry this link Sam (if that is your real name!) on the MS site:
Also check out the alternatives in the applications forum. There are some nice free office apps out there.
December 2, 2008 at 1:48 pm #173324Sandy_UKMemberHi Sam, Congrats on your new NC 10. Yes, there is indeed a free 60 days trial offer for office 2007.
Go to http://trial.trymicrosoftoffice.com/trialukireland/default.aspxHowever, I have downloaded open office and I must confess that am very happy using open office. It has got seamless integration with MS Office. So no issues there.
Another advice I’d like to offer is if you find the touchpad area too small for comfort you can get a wireless optical notebook mouse……..and you will be up and running in no time …!
December 2, 2008 at 2:22 pm #173329Sam SungMemberThanks everyone for their kind comments.
Well, my router arrived just now, so I have two new toys to play with (hope they play together well). Unfortunately, I am behind schedule with my work, so i will have to leave playing with my new toys until this evening.

[/quote1228400852]Does it support Office 2007 format files? The version of Open Office I downloaded recently didn’t.
It’s good for the price, but I’ve always found it different enough to MS Office to put a lot of people off and I’ve seen formatting differences when moving documents between the two.

[/quote1228407090]Make sure you downloaded version 3 – that looks to be the one that introduced 2k7 support.
December 4, 2008 at 4:18 pm #173323jezMemberOpen Office is plenty fine for casual users. No it’s not the same as MS Office, the functionality isnt there and the interface is very dated imo, but I bet 90% of home users won’t know any different.
But given there is a trial the best thing is to give both a go and then you can decide whether it is worth that extra cost or not :).
December 4, 2008 at 4:37 pm #173332snowmanMemberGood to know it offer 2007 support, I must’ve downloaded an older version and it was a little while ago now.
It’s a decent tool for most people, I agree, and the price is unbeatable 😀

December 4, 2008 at 6:40 pm #173330scientistMemberIn the U.S., if you go to your local University campus bookstore, you can often find MS Office priced substantially lower than at the local retailers.
Users of MS Office 2003 (like me) can download file format compatibility converters for Office 2007 fies here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=enI keep both MS Office 2003 and OpenOffice 3 on my computers – that way I can convert some of the odd document formats that the students turn in for their assignments.
January 18, 2009 at 7:51 pm #173334bklynwriterMemberI was able to get a copy of office 2007 Enterprise Edition through my work for $20, as part of a corporate “Home Use Program. Theoretically I own the license as long as I work for my company. Check to see if your workplace offers the same.
January 18, 2009 at 8:55 pm #173333ZPEMemberI prefer Office 2003 over Office 2007 so I opted for Open Office. It’s not the same obviously but I like using it. I’m still deciding whether to install MS Office as Open Office is doing what I want anyway.
