Hi, I have a N220 which I think is great.
The question is that as there is no software supplied and the only backup/recovery solution is to copy to another partition on the HD, what happens in the event the hard drive physically fails?
True, you can then copy ithe backup image to some other media, but what use is that as the backup image has no bootable option? Nor once a new OS has been installed do you have the recovery software to install to read it ?
So what is the solution if you have to replace the HD? – Regualrly back up the data to a USB stick and be preparded to buy another copy of Windows, or invest in some alternative back up software like Ghost or Achronis from which you can make a bootable recovery image?
Is there another solution, can you download a copy of the Recovery Solution 4 or even Windows 7 Starter and if so from where? I’d love to know
Contracttim,
welcome to the forum.
I wondered about the windows replacement question as well when I got my 220. Some S/W including recovery solution can be found here – http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-computers/netbooks/NP-N220-JA01UK/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=support
I dont think you can officially get a windows 7 replacement download though. I would assume, if the harddrive failed in warranty, Samsung would then replace the HD and the windows. But once out of warranty Im not sure.
Have a look at this post re backup questions, it may help – http://www.sammymobile.com/plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?52379.0
Hope its the info you required, if not post back.
thanks Fred232, I am downloading the s/w as I type!
As for the Win 7 starter version, if you have a DVD writer you can create a system repair disc and then use a saved system image via the backup and restore feature in the Control Panel – what the files sizes are I don’t know.
I have also come across a possible solution which involves creating a bootable USB Win 7 install drive – (http://maketecheasier.com/updated-boot-and-install-windows-7-from-usb-flash-drive/2009/09/12) if you have a Win 7 dvd, which wil then allow you to install the Recovery Solution s/w, and so use the backup image made eariler to return to the pre crash state.
Thanks for that info, I’ll have a look later.
Sadly, as yet, I dont have an external DVD writer for the NB, and it didn’t come with a W7 disc 🙁
I’m backing up to external USB. I mean to get a DVD writer and then use Acronis as I do on my desktop.
