MemberIf you mean does it have a sim slot for a mobile phone sim card then it is a no.
If you mean the 3G dongle like three and others are offering mobile broadband on then it is a yes as these devices are just USB.

Memberyeah as above, I’m on the look out for the next mobile broadband deal I see. Every now and then one of the operators has a “free” dongle and a way cheaper rate! The last I saw, I forget who, was offering 1gb for £5 a month which is just what I want. I think it was through quidco.com
If I see such a deal rest assured I will flag it up here :)!

MemberI keep getting offers from Three, I have a couple of mobiles on monthly contract with them and they keep offering their mobile broadband tarriffs for half the normal price to existing subscribers. I am very wary of signing up for 18 months though without being able to try before I buy.

Memberyeah the long contracts do put me off, which is why Id not want to pay 15/20 pounds every month. A fiver and I’ll take the gamble!
The other thing about the long contracts is that I think this sector will move quickly and prices/tariffs will improve so I think before anyone signs up they’ll want to be happy that they won’t get annoyed that a new deal comes out at half the price for twice the usage allowance!
The first thing Im actually going to try is the free WiFi connectivity at my local Starbucks, McDonalds or Wetherspoons pub. If that seems workable then maybe I’ll live without true mobile broadband for a bit…!

MemberA slightly different question on 3G (sorry if it’s a bit dumb!).
I have a (work supplied) Blackberry …. would my sim card from the BB be usable in a 3G Netbook? If so, is there a dongle/usb connection where I could plug that sim card into on the market ?

MemberThere is another way….
I have a contract with Three UK (3) and for £5 a month I get internet on my phone which is a Nokia.
Install Nokia’s PC suite and you’ll see one of the options available is to connect to the internet via your mobile.
My current mobile is a Nokia N73 (about 2 years old now – shocking!) which I got when they first came out. It’s the old fashioned kind of 3G connection so max speed is about 460KBPS. Still not too bad though!
If you got yourself an HSDPA phone then the connection speed will go up to about 2MBPS or perhaps more. I know the N95 and N96 will have this but I think too a smaller cheaper phone does also.
The great thing is that as the NC10 has bluetooth and Nokia PC suite accepts that as a connection between the phone and PC you don’t even have to take the phone out of your pocket so long as you pre set up the bluetooth connection and auto allow.
Quick summary:
1. Get Nokia Mobile phone on Contract (pref. Symbian OS & HSDPA)
2. Add on £5 internet access to contract
3. Install Nokia PC Suite onto Samsung NC10
4. Turn on Bluetooth on both Nokia & Samsung
5. Auto allow the Samsung to connect to the Nokia (pair the devices)
6. Simply leave your phone’s bluetooth always on. (If you’re worried about outsiders connecting then put bluetooth mode to hidden – providing you have already paired with the Samsung it will still see it).
7. In PC suite connect to the internet using the button, the setttings are simply: select the Nokia as the modem then “3G United Kingdom” as the final setting.
8. Enjoy internet without plugging anything into the Samsung or even taking your phone out of your pocket 🙂I feel that this method is much better than having a dongle stuck out the side of the laptop as, after all, a dongle is just a phone with no screen or numberpad!
1st note; Originally I signed up for X series Silver with 3, I think they now have a seperate thing called simply “internet” referring to access on your phone.
2nd note; you can also then install Opera Mini on your phone so if you’re away from your laptop you can still browse full internet – for me it’s unrestricted.
3rd note; there’s a fair use pollicy which is at 1gb but it is also “unlimited”…. get your head around that one lol.
4th note; I don’t think you can do this with Sony Ericsson as far as I’m aware as you need the capabilities of Nokia PC Suite. but if you can please reply here!
5th note; Obviously this is only good in 3G areas of reception which I think is now pretty well everywhere in England, most of Scotland and Wales except the mountains!

Memberjon – does your n73 keep powering down as mine is doing my nut in, lcukily mne flatmate works at 3 !!
when i opened the case the slot which was on the pre produvction module for the internal pcie hsdpa slot has been removed so you cant even purchase a pcie mini card with built in sim which is a shame

MemberMy N73 is absolutely fine. I have actually upgraded it by using Nokia’s software updater so it is now running the same firmware as the N73 music edition. I’d give that a go if you’re having issues although it sounds more like a hardware fault on your phone – perhaps a new battery is needed or something – no idea!?

MemberWARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
The addon Jonbad is talking about is for use with the internet on your PHONE only, i.e. not as a modem. For that you will pay quite a premium for anything you download via the modem.
There is, however, a £10 option which allows you 10GB/Month of internet, which seems very reasonable. I use it with a Nokia 6120 classic (HSDPA) and am very pleased (small and cheap, if it breaks/get’s lost, get another). I need to use usb to get super fast internet, but bluetooth 2.0’s EDR speed is quite ok for me. I can watch you tube etc as much as I want with no hiccups so just don’t see the need for faster. Maybe others can, but for me this is just fine.
But beware, re my main point, you will be billed to high heaven without the right addon. Make sure you do.
