When news first popped up about the NC10 it was said to support 3g connectivity through the internal 3g sim modem found behind the battery, see JKK mobile review here: [link]http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2008/10/samsung-nc10-netbook-tested.html[/url]
So with models coming out in the US and UK without them, it makes me wonder if we are in another EEEPC 901 situation, e.g. unconnected solder points on the logic board where the modem should be. Being a kill-joy and having the fear of god in me in relation to my warranty (this wont last) I’ve not opened mine up yet, but I hear there is a mini PCI slot where the kit should go. Hopefully we only need the PCI card itself and not the sim slot, so we can later retro-fit 3g with an upgrade module…. somehow I think we wont be so lucky.
What’s the deal with all the variants? Some with 3 cells, some with 80gb drives and not the full 160gb units?
This leads me to 2 conclusions…either the asian market get different flavours, OR and the most likely as is with the current trend… hold off the 3g ready models for ‘contract’ 3g broadband providers to clear up, so you can only enjoy through mobile broadband by paying a silly premium (as is in the UK) equalling your mobile phone contract, leaving us full paying purchace customers without.
Why don’t they just give us the kit and let us find our own provider soloutions with our own sims with dataplans!
I’m not a fan of having a dongle flap about in the wind!
November 26, 2008 at 10:47 pm #171742hefMemberin the currys christmas catalogue i’ve jsut read the blurb and it actually states “an embedded sim for mobile broadband” as one of the features….
November 27, 2008 at 8:25 am #171746barney91MemberWell Currys / Dixons / PC word are all part of the DSG brand and share stock levels, so I’m sure someone can confirm this very soon, though I think its probably a typo?
November 27, 2008 at 9:52 am #171749normMemberYes, all the same company (and Pixmania as well).
And yes, a typo I think…
November 27, 2008 at 10:18 am #171747barney91MemberThe buggers!
May be worth buying one then complaining! May get some vouchers or something!
November 27, 2008 at 11:19 am #171741TheRingMemberThere is definelty no sim card mechanics on the motherboard on uk white one. this doesent matter greatly as you can get internal 36 with build in sim
November 27, 2008 at 12:34 pm #171743hefMemberit’s more likely down to the company’s stupidity than a typo.
one letter is a typo.
a whole sentence is a deliberate misrepresentation.November 27, 2008 at 12:55 pm #171748barney91MemberTheRing – internal full 3g with simslot ON the mini-pci express card?
Where / when / who / how?
November 27, 2008 at 3:15 pm #171744BritmanMemberbarney91, you can get a HSDPA card with a built in sim card holder. But there is NO WHERE to connect it inside the NC10. Sure the spce for a card is there but no mini PCIe or any other type of connector.
Well if it turns out that Currys or whoever do have a NC10 with 3G, I will be buying one and putting this one on ebay.
November 27, 2008 at 5:08 pm #171745sat123Memberbought mine from Currys and can confirm there in no 3g sim slot
