All you are being asked to do the first time it boots is how to set up logical (software) drives on a single physical drive. For most people it probably won’t matter too much. For purists in terms of drive performance, settting up one logical C drive without a D drive makes the most sense. That way the drive heads aren’t forced to search back and forth between two physical areas, and some older application software might get confused or run less efficiently by having program and data files stored on two different logical drives. If there were two physical drives in the Sammy instead of one, it would improve performance to put the page (swap) files for Windows and Adobe applications on the second physcial drive. Some new netbooks are coming out with combo SSDs and HDDs for that reason.

Having read through all of these posts I am left a little confused as to how to partition the HDD on start-up. I originally thought that creating a C drive (for programs) and D drive (for files) would make the HDD more quick/efficient, but your post seems to suggest that it is better to just have a C drive and set D to zero (as a few others have mentioned). Although the NC10 does not have an SSD option, I do plan on upgrading to 2MB of RAM and setting up a Ram drive (R) for page and internet cache files. Assuming I can create a RAM drive, which partition option is better for the average user? I plan to use my NC10 for web surfing, MS Office programs (mostly Word, Outlook and Powerpoint). I will be using VPN to connect to my office network. Other than that, probably not many other programs.
So, which partition set up (C only versus C for programs and D for files) would you recommend in terms of speed and efficiency? Which will make it easier to back up on the HDD on an external drive? As of now I am hoping to keep the HDD relatively clean, and saving most files on a USB thumb drive or memory card.
My NC10 is scheduled to arrive in a few days, so all opinions are appreciated.
